TAMPA — Two people were rescued from their burning second-floor apartment on Monday thanks to some quick-thinking bystanders, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

The incident took place at about 4:55 p.m. at the Parkview Apartments at 10981 Brittany Lane, just off N Florida Avenue. A fire broke out in a downstairs kitchen and quickly spread.

When firefighters arrived they reported seeing smoke and flames shooting out of the top and bottom units on one side of the brick-lined apartment building. Neighbors and auto dealership employees — one of them a former New York volunteer firefighter — used a ladder to help a man and woman escape the second-story flames.

That likely saved their lives, said Tampa Fire Rescue. The two were taken to a local hospital with what officials said were non life-threatening injuries. A firefighter also suffered a minor injury and was taken to a hospital.

The fire was brought under control about an hour later. But the two 10 adults who lived in the building’s four residences were all displaced. The American Red Cross is assisting them.

Investigators believe the cause of the fire was accidental, but did not elaborate. The investigation is continuing.
