North Tampa Road Rage Incident Turns Deadly

TAMPA, FL — Tampa Police are investigating a homicide that apparently resulted from a road rage incident between the driver of a black BMW and the driver of a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

The confrontation and homicide occurred at the intersection of Fowler Avenue and Interstate 275. The truck in which the fatally injured man was a passenger ultimately stopped at West 109th Avenue and North Ashley Street.

According to police, the confrontation began at about 11:22 a.m. Wednesday, April 4. Both the BMW and pickup truck were in the westbound lane on Fowler Avenue. The driver of the BMW got out and verbally confronted the passenger in the truck, Gilbert Serna, 56, who remained in the truck. Police say the verbal confrontation turned physical. The driver of the BMW inflicted upper body trauma on Serna and then got back in his car and proceeded west on Fowler Avenue.

The driver of the pickup truck tried to follow the BMW but ultimately pulled over at the corner of W.. 109th Avenue and North Ashley Street to get medical help for Serna.

Tampa Police performed CPR until Serna was transported to the hospital where he died.

The driver of the BMW has not been located.
